Laptop vs Desktop Gaming
Which one to buy :- Laptop or Desktop
Laptops and desktop are compulsory devices at home. They are needed for different day to day works, whether it is a job related or school homework or even for gaming. Most of the people have this confusion of which one should they go for. It all depends on the type of work and usage you have. In this I will try to explain them with respect to each and every aspect different people have in mind.
1. Portability and Size
Laptops are portable devices and can be taken to anywhere in the world without any issues. This will help a person to keep his important files and data with him wherever he goes. On the other hand desktops are immobile and cannot be taken anywhere unless you are shifting from one house to another. Laptops can be placed anywhere due to its compact size. So if you are watching a movie or working on a project and you are feeling uncomfortable where you are working then you can easily move from that place to another where you feel comfortable. This is the interesting thing I like about laptops. Before having laptops, I had a desktop and it was placed at drawing room. So whenever someone came to our house, I had to pause the movie or game I was playing as you can't do it when someone is from outside is watching you all the time. Also you will have very little privacy with desktop as you can't watch any movies or play games having any adult contents as you don't know when your parents or young brother or sister will enter the room. Believe me I had to keep my fingers on alt+tab keys whenever I watched that type of movies or played games and it was really a nuisance. But recently I bought a gaming Laptop and now I don't have to sit alert while watching or playing games and yes I could take it wherever I go and do my work from anywhere in the world.
2. Gaming and Heating
If you are distinguishing laptop and desktop with respect to gaming then always go for desktop as it will have more GPU clock speed with same specs as that of laptop and will definitely provide more FPS in games than laptop. Laptops will have heating issues while gaming as they have small exhaust fans and little space for giving out the heat derived from GPU and CPU. This heating will slowly damage the laptop overtime and may also result in framedrops while playing games. On the other hand, desktops have bigger fans for both cpu and gpu and has sufficient space to give out the heat generated by cpu and gpu. Thus desktop will have longer life as compared to laptop. If you are not a hardcore gamer then you can go for laptop as playing games for 1-2 hr. will not do great damage and you can play games anywhere you want. Portability of laptop gives very good advantage for gamers. I had to leave my desktop at home when I went to college in different state where I was living in hostel. At that time I wished if I had laptop. Then after a year I got a laptop and then I was able to play games (not hardcore gaming) and work on my projects properly. If you want a real gaming laptop then you should go for high end laptops which will have large components and air ventilation which keep it cool ,thus, allow it for hardcore gaming for several hours. It will also have large weight due to its large components, so it will be difficult to carry around everywhere you go.
3. Performance and Power Supply
There is no doubt that desktop will give more performance all over than laptop with both having same specifications. This is because each and every components of laptop is small in size due to which they have limitations in their performance and, thus, its efficiency is decreased. On the other hand desktops have large components and don't have much limitations in their performance. You must have noted that processors provided in laptop always has less frequency than same processor in desktop due to which performance is decreased. Same is in the case of GPU, RAM, cooling fan, etc. Due to these reasons you will see decreased FPS on gaming in laptop while comparing with desktop having same specs. Other important parameter which affect performance is power supply. Laptops consume less power as compared to desktop as they have to work on battery. Due to this, its components will also absorb less power and gives less efficiency than desktop. In case of desktop, unlimited power supply is available due to which no limitations in performance will be there. While gaming in laptop, always keep it plugged in to get full efficiency and more FPS in games.
4. Customisability and Modification
Desktops can be customised or modified as much as user wants but laptops can be customised upto some extent. One, who knows basics of computer can increase the ram of desktop by inserting additional ram in ram slots provided on motherboard. Similarly they can change processor, power supply, add dvd player, HDD or even graphic card to their desktop. But in case of laptop, one must be professional in laptop engineering to modify it. If it is done by normal person, then slight change in wires can cause irreparable damage to laptop. One cannot modify processor or graphic card which comes integrated in laptop. You can increase ram but in some laptop, this option is also not available. For heating problems, you can buy cooling pads which will cool the laptop while gaming. Similarly you can also add HDD or SSD, if need more storage in both laptop and desktop. Most of the recent laptops do not come with DVD player and you also cannot add it. So if you want to use some old CDs or DVDs or want to install new Windows then you have to buy an external DVD player which can be connected to laptop through USB
5. Price and Repairing
Laptops are always more costlier than desktop even though both have same specs. This is because making small sized components requires more money. Similarly repairing a laptop is also costlier than desktops. In case of desktops, one can also repair it himself if he has little knowledge about desktops. One can buy PC components from Flipkart or Amazon at cheap rates and fix it into CPU on his own. This will reduce the repair cost. Also chances of error and damaging the components are less. But in case of laptop, a professional is required to repair it. Doing it on your own can cause more damage to it as it has small components and just a slight error can lead to irreparable damage to laptops. Also laptops have more chances of being damaged as compared to desktops as they will get heated up faster due to poor ventilation as compared to desktop. Gaming in laptop for long hours will generate tremendous amount of heat which can lead to short circuit or damage to motherboard due to overheating.
Conclusion :-
If you have read the above information carefully then you may have noted that laptop is having only one advantage of portability and size and even after that it preferred by people. This is because of only one reason. Imagine that you have built a high end desktop by spending a lot of money on it. Buy after a few months, you have to move from your house to another city or country. Will you be able to take your PC with you ? This is why laptop are competitively good with respect to desktop. According to me both of them are winners. If you want a less costlier system for hardcore gaming then you should go for desktop, otherwise, you can go for laptop which will help you in your profession also.
